Character:

Sarah Hemstock (March, 2000).
Lucy was not bright, but she was a great clown. Myself and my Mum, Dad and Nan used to travel to shows with Roy and Mary Wint and Jerry and Joan Holmes in a mini-bus. Lucy would hop from knee to knee - she was a restless traveller. On one occasion she stood on a travel rug on someone's knee and sank to the floor, everyone laughed at her and she actually looked embarrassed about it!
As a youngster Lucy was quite difficult to handle - she was fine when standing but used to move in a variety of mysterious ways. Her favourite tricks included backing into her collar, loaping, pacing and turning backflips!! The annoying thing was that she would behave perfectly when not in the ring - she just had to entertain. The problem was eventually solved by hard work and practice.
Lucy was quite bloody-minded and had a habit of disappearing when let off the lead. She used to run off in an attempt to get you to follow her - my solution was to run in the opposite direction, then she would chase you. Mary used to get her back by lying on her back and doing the dance of the dying fly, Lucy would then run back to her to join in the game!!
On one occasion Lucy's running off trick proved to be a disaster - she got into a fight with a goods train and came off worst. Her collar got hooked on the train and she was dragged for about 30 yards before she managed to free herself. Roy rushed her to the vets. The vet said that there was nothing he could do, apparently she had cracked several ribs, and had severe internal injuries and bleeding. Roy decided against having her put to sleep. He took her home and wrapped her in a blanket on the settee in front of the fire. Mary phoned me and I went over so I could be there for Lucy's last hours. On seeing me, Lucy roused herself and tried to get off the settee. I sat with her overnight and she became stronger and stronger. Needless to say, she made a miraculous recovery and went on to win CC and Best in Show at the East Midlands Golden Jubilee Show the following week!! A true story and a true Stafford. The only ill-effects she had from her run-in with the train is that she did not like loud mechanical noises, and the bottom of one of her ribs was a bit lumpy - but you can't have everything!!
