Interesting Facts:
  • Fagin was "M" line bred on his Sire's side, through Jolihem Adonis, Ch. Wychbury Kimbo & Ch. Widneyland Kim (both these dogs were admired by Lionel F. Hemstock and were central to his breeding programmes for both is red and brindle stock). Fagin was used very selectively at stud but produced a Champion in practically every litter he sired. Ch. Jolihem Dreadnought and Ch. Jolihem Ringmaster are still a potent force today and form the centre of many breeding programmes - although many Stafford breeders today are astonishingly unaware of this !! (See line breeding). Today's top winning dog, Ch. Domino Flashy Lad, goes back to this line through an unbroken line of Champion Sires - as does Ch. Nordic Chief, Ch. Highland Dream, Maktoum Yacht Master of Jolihem and Jolihem The Lad Himself. This list is not exhaustive and doesn't include the related bitches.
  • Fagin was campaigned alongside  Ch. Jolihem Gallant Bess. In 1969, at the Dumfries and Galloway Canine Society General Championship Show, June Horsfall awarded Dog CC and Best Opposite Sex to Fagin and Bitch CC and Best of Breed to his sister - Bess. This was another first for Jolihem and for the breed - it has not been repeated since.
  • Fagin won CC's under June Horsfall, H. J. Wall, Abe Harkness, J. Cartledge, and Joyce Shorrock.
  • Malc Boam (Fulfin) described Ch. Jolihem Ringmaster as one of the outstanding dogs of the decade (1970-1980).
  • Abe Harkness also lists Ch. Jolihem Ringmaster as one of his all time favourite dogs.
  • Mr. F. J. Clark (owner of Ch. Curffews White Orchid who won 11 CC's from 1966-1970. She was half sister of Ch. Jolihem Dreadnought and one of Jo and Lionel Hemstock's all time favourites) said (Feb, 2000) "I know Lionel was all Dreadnought, but I always thought that Ringmaster was a better dog". On seeing litter mates Maktoum Image of Jolihem and Maktoum Yacht Master (by Ch. Nordic Chief) at Windsor Championship Dog Show in 1999 he could not believe how similar the pair were to littermates Ringmaster and Bess. He thought it was uncanny. Proof positive that the line is still going strong and that Dreadnought and Ringmaster are still a potent force throughout the generations.
Character:
Fagin was very headstrong and was an incredibly dominant dog - both in temperament and as a stud dog. Fagin was Sarah Hemstock's dog.
Sarah Hemstock, February 2000:
"I loved Fagin, but my first love was his Father, Ch. Jolihem Dreadnought - or Satan to his friends. In a way I now feel sorry for Fagin as he always had his Father to live up to - he was always in Satan's shadow !! I can remember Fagin was a very restless dog, I was always retrieving him from the next door neighbour's garden pond - they were not amused - especially at the green slime all over their lovely rockery !! He was great fun, very trustworthy and very robust !! Fagin was also a great escape artist, he never came to any harm, and I never worked out how he managed to exit the premises at will - an amazing talent. On one street patrol, after yet another great escape, I was wandering the streets shouting "FAGIN !!!" when I saw him with a man. The man had my Fagin on a lead and was walking him down the street. Fagin was walking properly with him, not pulling, choking or generally being a nuisance at all - I thought that this was strange at the time. I ran up to the man and demanded that he give me my dog. The man insisted that the dog was his and would not let me have him. I had had the "Kid's Talk" from my parents regarding strangers, so I gave the man a hefty kick in the shins, leapt back out of arms reach and informed the man that I would be back with my Dad, who was bigger than he was and would do all the things that Big Dad's do. And my Dad had been a boxer - so there. I ran home. Meanwhile, my Dad had retrieved Fagin from the next doors pond and as I arrived home my Mum was drying Fagin in the kitchen. I couldn't understand how Fagin had got home before me, and had even had time to do a few laps of next doors pond. I told my Dad about the man who had tried to steel Fagin. My Dad seemed more puzzled than concerned, so he sat me in the car and we drove to where I had seen the man with Fagin. We found the man, and he still had Fagin. However, to my great disappointment, we had not entered a parallel universe, we had just managed to find Jo Argile walking Ch. Jokartan Royal Tan. Ch. Jokartan Royal Tan  (a son of  Fagin, Grandson and Great Grandson of Ch. Jolihem Dreadnought) was the spitting image of Fagin, the only difference was that Fagin had a full white front. The likeness was uncanny - conclusive proof that Fagin was a very dominant stud dog."
